Hi, I’m Bette Blei, and I’ve been a teacher for over forty years—it’s something I love, and I’m still teaching today! I have a master’s degree in education, but the real learning comes from my students and the experiences we share together. Raised in a big Midwestern family, I now live in Southern California. I do make sure to get back to my roots a few times each year.

Like my dad, who was a writer, I love to connect with people and believe I can strike up a conversation with just about anyone. When I’m not in the classroom or writing, you’ll often find me in the kitchen, cooking and enjoying the warmth of home life.

My children’s book series actually took root over 25 years ago. It’s been a journey of love and creativity, made even more special by a talented local illustrator who lives in the nearby mountains. Her handcrafted images truly brought my work to life.

This site will also feature stories written by my father—published posthumously, as he always dreamed of seeing his work in print. His love for language is part of what inspires me today.

I’m a simple person who believes in the power of language, laughter, and community—whether through books, conversations, or time spent with the people and pets I love.
